Clearance Letters

If you hire contractors to do work for you, connect is an easy way to confirm that the contractor is in good standing with WorkplaceNL and thus protect you from potential liability.

Employers who hire contractors, or who work as contractors, will need clearance from WorkplaceNL as part of their contract requirements.

There are two ways to obtain clearance on connect:

• Either the principal or the contractor can request clearance on connect and get an immediate response. This clearance is valid for 45 days.
• You can create a subcontractor status list of the contractors you hire and automatically receive a nightly notification when any of your contractor's status changes with WorkplaceNL, saving you time and reducing administrative effort.

Employers do not need to report contractors on their annual contractor statement if they obtained clearance on each contractor for the applicable contract period.

Individuals you hire under contract may be considered your workers. This also applies to non-incorporated companies where the owners are the ones performing the work for you. WorkplaceNL has the exclusive jurisdiction to determine which individuals are independent operators and which individuals are workers.
